Service Introduction

Supporting Everyday Participation and Independence

Everyday activities can become challenging when a child experiences difficulties with sensory processing, emotional regulation, attention, movement, organisation or daily routines.

Our occupational therapists consider how the child's abilities, environment and individual needs affect their participation at home, at school and in the wider community. This helps identify practical strategies and appropriate areas of support.

Occupational Therapy Assessment

Understanding How Your Child Functions Day to Day

  • Comprehensive occupational therapy assessments
  • Sensory processing and regulation assessments
  • Sensory integration-informed assessments
  • Evaluation of emotional regulation and attention
  • Executive functioning assessments
  • Assessment of motor and visual-motor skills
  • Evaluation of everyday routines and functional participation
  • Assessment of independence and daily living skills
  • Review of participation within school activities

Assessment may include clinical observations, structured activities, standardised assessment tools and information from parents, caregivers or schools.

Occupational Therapy Interventions

Practical Support Shaped
Around Each Child

Following assessment, an individual plan may be developed to address the child's identified needs. Support may include:

  • Sensory regulation and self-management programmes
  • Personalised sensory strategies
  • Executive functioning and organisational support
  • Strategies for attention, planning and task initiation
  • Fine motor and visual-motor interventions, where indicated
  • Support for emotional regulation
  • Development of everyday living skills
  • Support for independence across daily routines
  • Practical strategies for home, school and community environments

The recommended approach will depend on the child's assessment findings, needs and agreed objectives.

Areas of Everyday Support

Helping Children Participate MoreComfortably

Occupational therapy can support children with personal care, mealtime routines, handwriting, classroom activities and completing everyday tasks. It may also help with attention, sensory processing, emotional and physical regulation, managing transitions, play and developing age-appropriate independence.

Not every child will require support in each area. Recommendations will be based on their individual presentation and priorities.
