Service Introduction

Supporting Children to Understand and Communicate

Communication involves more than speaking. A child may experience difficulties understanding language, expressing their thoughts, producing speech sounds or navigating social interactions.

Our speech and language therapists consider each child's communication strengths, needs and environment to identify appropriate recommendations and areas of support.

Speech and Language Assessment

Understanding Your Child's Communication Needs

  • Comprehensive speech and language assessments
  • Evaluation of expressive language skills
  • Evaluation of receptive language skills
  • Assessment of speech sounds and clarity
  • Pragmatic language and social communication assessments
  • Communication assessments for autistic children and young people
  • Review of communication within home, school and social settings
  • Standardised assessment tools, where appropriate

Assessment may include conversations, observations, structured activities and information from parents, caregivers or schools

Personalised Communication
Support

Following assessment, an individual plan may be developed around the child's identified communication needs. Support may include:

  • Individual speech and language therapy
  • Support with speech sounds and clarity
  • Expressive and receptive language interventions
  • Social communication and pragmatic language support
  • Narrative and conversation skills
  • Support with understanding and following language
  • Strategies for participating in social interactions
  • Communication approaches that support emotional regulation
  • Language-based support for classroom engagement
  • Augmentative and alternative communication for children who may benefit from it

The recommended approach will depend on the child's assessment findings, age, communication profile and agreed objectives.

Areas of Everyday Support

Building Communication AcrossDaily Life

Speech and language therapy can support children and young people with understanding instructions, expressing their needs, thoughts and feelings, developing vocabulary and speaking more clearly. It may also help with conversation skills, recognising social cues, sharing information and participating in classroom discussions.

Not every child will require support in each area. Recommendations will be based on their individual needs and priorities.
